Excellence without compromise is possible, and we call it harmony.

FUSION CORE UPDATE SEPTEMBER 7, 2020

Since 1964, Drum Corps Associates has provided tens of thousands of individuals with music education and performance opportunities throughout the United States and internationally. For over a half century, DCA and its member organizations have consistently provided a forum for the collaboration and creative expression of performers of all ages. The COVID-19 pandemic has created unique challenges for businesses and non-profit organizations of all kinds, and DCA organizations are no exception.

Fusion Core recognizes that with great challenges come invaluable opportunities for growth and development. As we all work diligently to navigate these uncertain times, it is important to remain flexible and adaptable if we hope to achieve growth at the personal and organizational levels. Fusion Core is committed to embracing the challenges with which the organization is presented and investing in the evolution of the Core.

What will the road ahead look like?

It is clear at this time that the 2021 season may look different. At a minimum, precautionary measures will be taken in 2021 to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Our modified 2020 program laid the groundwork for 2021 and demonstrated that it is possible to have a meaningful drum corps experience despite the obstacles presented by the pandemic.

In addition to taking precautions to ensure the health and wellness of our members and staff, we will strive to modify our program to increase access across all ages. In recent years, DCA organizations have moved toward a competitive model requiring a significant time investment for all members and staff. While this model may have prepared our younger members for taking that next step within their drum corps experience, it also restricted access and caused some members without the ability to invest in the schedule to leave the activity.

We at Fusion Core believe that a reduction in the required time commitment would serve to increase access to the activity for passionate performers who have time restrictions. We believe it is possible to create a high-quality production and to enjoy the competitive spirit of the activity while reducing the time commitment that has historically been required. In this age of unprecedented connectivity and information saturation, a healthy balance can seem elusive. We hope to offer a rich and meaningful experience to members and staff without asking them to compromise in other areas of their lives. Excellence without compromise is possible, and we call it harmony.

In practice, we will create a balanced all-ages experience by making Fusion Core a Saturday only activity in 2021. While in-person rehearsal time throughout the winter will be greatly reduced, members will be expected to work diligently at home and arrive prepared. As access to schools is unlikely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of our activities will take place outdoors.

Prospective members will be provided show music at our Open House event so we can get the most out of the time we spend together. Tuition will be reduced to reflect the decrease in members’ time commitment and the organization’s overhead. Additional information about the 2021 program will be released soon. Please refer to the FAQ section which will be posted shortly on our website at www.fusioncore.org
